Custon doorknob from the Union Trust Building, 705 Olive Street, St Louis, MO was built 1892-93. Alder & Sullivan were the architects. In the Artistic Hardware introduction of Henry Towne's 'Locks & Builders Hardware' Sullivan is described as one "of several of the most capable designers of Chicago (who) became interested in the efforts of The Yale & Towne Manufacturing Company to produce much more artistic" hardware. The extent to which Mr. Sullivan personally worked with the designers at Yale is unknown, but the plate for the Union Trust hardware is likely directly or indirectly by the firm. Mr. Towne later described Sullivan as a designer who "developed a rich vein of striking originality, delicacy and grace" that was characterized by "lace-like geometric ornament" . Page 578 of the book has a picture of Sullivan designed building ornament containing a design similar to the center of the plate used with this knob. This design called Senlis was shown in the 1894 (p. 7) and 1897 (p. 133) Yale catalogs with the UTB emblem. After that the design showed the knob with the emblem removed.
