Shown in 1890 Allentown Hardware catalog pages 114, 120, 137 with Gilbert style rotating knob based on patent number 335,914 Feb. 9, 1886 . Allentown purchased Gilbert Lock Company and the Gilbert patents in 1889.  Also shown was a non-box style knob of this design. The knob is bronze with a cast iron insert.
